September is Hunger Action Month.
It is commonly acknowledged that food is a basic need and that hunger and health are intimately connected. Research continues to indicate that hunger and food insecurity have immediate and lasting health effects. Anti-hunger advocates have responded by establishing new and innovative university and community partnerships to fight hunger and improve health outcomes.
Second Harvest Foodbank will lead a discussion about current efforts being conducted by the Foodbank, the University of Wisconsin and others to prevent the further spread of chronic disease associated with lack of access to nutritious food.
Gina Wilson of Second Harvest Food Bank will facilitate a discussion with Amber Canto, WNEP State Coordinator. Anne Gargano Ahmed will speak about the HungerCare Coalition and Second Harvest's new Diabetes Wellness Program Pilot. Chrissy Nichols, an MPH candidate who is working with UW-Extension, will also speak on the Safe and Healthy Food Pantry Project.
This event is part of a series of Food Systems Gatherings around the topic "Food and the Wisconsin Idea" intended to create a space for faculty, students and community members to network and discuss food systems issues.
The event is free and open to the public. ... See MoreSee Less
